Thoughts from a Wanna-Be Super-hero

In my early 20s, I answered a Craigslist ad seeking someone to write original music for a short film about a nerdy guy who keeps daydreaming himself through life. Quietly watching the girl of his dreams from afar--that is, the comic book store where he works, he has grand visions of himself as a superhero, but is struggling to take any action in reality. This song was my translation of that. At the time I didn't know anything about DC vs. Marvel, so it references characters from both!

A, E, G, D

VERSE 1

I’ve read all these books.

I know how this goes.

Know how I’m supposed to be to get you.

It’s all over my face—

just what’s not on my chest—

That at absolute best I’m falling for you.

C#, D, A, E

But I’m all Clark and I’m stuck to this floor.

VERSE 2

Girls can read in magazines

That confidence is all they need.

But I’m not allowed to lack anything.

BRIDGE

C#m, A, E, B

Maybe it’s not me, maybe it’s you—

And your x-ray vision is failing

So you haven’t seen me yet.

VERSE 3

We’re tangled in a spider web

of things we wish I would’ve said,

And I’d save the day if I knew I could.

But I’m all Parker and I’m stuck to this floor.

VERSE 4

I wanna be big,

And shred all these seams.

You think you could like me when I’m angry?

I want you to understand what I mean.

CLOSE

I’ve read all these books.

I know how this goes.

Know how I’m supposed to be to get you.
